Chapter 82 is built on research advocating the power of purposeful and contextual learning. Our Ethos and Pedagogy pages are here to provide insight into our approach and to inspire new ideas.

Storytelling

Storytelling is at the heart of what we do. We are passionate about the power of stories. We are all born with an innate love of stories and a primal need to make connections with others and ourselves. Storytelling facilitates this magic and so much more..

Reading

At Chapter 82, we connect children to the power of stories. We get children reading for a purpose; whether that be for fun, for information, or many other reasons. We want reading to be meaningful. For some children, the process of learning to read becomes a chore, something they might comply with a school at best and resist at home. For the child it can feel like a series of non-negotiable tasks to complete, to acquire unconnected skills which must be learnt and then applied. A strong emphasis can be placed on fluency, accuracy, speed and comprehension. We want the emphasis to be on enjoyment and engagement.

Writing

As there are many reasons for speaking, there are many reasons for writing too. The process of watching a child learn how to write can be a magical one. However, for some children, this is a struggle.

Once a happy and able writer, the world opens up for you. You have a means of communication and therefore an alternative way to express yourself, to create, to explore and to produce.

The purpose of reading and writing is not to be able to read and write. The purpose of reading and writing is to inspire, to know, to understand, to communicate, to expand, to feel, to learn, to love, to grieve, to laugh..

ETHOS

We believe in creating opportunities for children to learn which are meaningful and purposeful.

We want to build on what we can do, instead of focusing on what we can’t do; that applies whether you’re a child struggling to write, a teacher at a loss with how to engage learners in their reading, writing, talking or thinking, or a parent looking to support their child with their learning.

We have no stickers, no reward charts and no official behaviour management systems. We believe in creating learning environments with a culture of respect, where learning becomes intrinsically rewarding.

We encourage mistakes.

We encourage growth.
